Gingerbread Man – Original Intervention

We have had so much fun with this intervention! It is a fun way to work on color identification, clothing identification, and sequencing. It is also a great tie in to the gingerbread man story or a school’s gingerbread man art activity. It is simple and can easily be adapted to include more options or sequencing. A brief video of the melody is enclosed at the bottom of the page!

Materials:

  • Gingerbread man cut out
  • Colored items of clothing
  • Guitar (optional)

Directions:

  1. Introduce the gingerbread man by showing the cutout
  2. Pass out the articles of clothing while naming them ex. “Sylvia gets the orange shirt!
  3. Sing the song – add in the question (Who has the orange shirt?) between repetitions
  4. Have the student place that item of clothing on the gingerbread man

Sequencing option:

  1. Steps 1-4
  2. Each chorus sing each line with a different article of clothing
  3. Direct students to point to each article as you sing it

Lyrics:

The Gingerbread man the gingerbread man

Jumped out of the oven one day

He stepped outside and start to run

But first I heard him say

I need my orange shirt

I need my orange shirt

I can’t run without my orange shirt

I need my orange shirt

I need my orange shirt

I can’t run without my orange shirt

Sequencing example:

I need my orange shirt

I need my blue pants

I can’t run without my red shoes
