Springtime is finally here in MN and our music therapists and teaching artists have all been having a blast using spring themed songs about flowers, baby animals, and growing. Early in the Springtime is a simple song that uses the melody from “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” and scarves for a fun movement activity. Feel free to use corresponding laminated visuals or visuals on a smartboard, ipad, etc as appropriate for your clients or students.

Start by passing out scarves and saying we are going to grow some flowers today. Then, pretend you have some “flower seeds” in your hand and sprinkle a few imaginary seeds into each of their hands.

[Lay scarves on the floor like pretend dirt and have students “dig” into the dirt and sprinkle seeds]

This is the way we plant the seeds, plant the seeds, plant the seeds.

This is the way we plant the seeds, so early in the springtime.

[Grab scarves and move downward from up high as “rain”]

This is the way the rain falls down, rain falls down, rain falls down.

This is the way the rain falls down, so early in the springtime.

[Have students make a “sun” by holding scarf up high between hands or balling up the scarf up high]

This is the way the sun comes out, sun comes out, sun comes out.

This is the way the sun comes out, so early in the springtime.

[Now move the scarves up from the floor like flowers growing from the ground]

This is the way the flowers grow, flowers grow, flowers grow.

This is the way the flowers grow, so early in the springtime.

[Scrunch up scarves into hands and let them “pop” into their hands or the air]

This is the way the flowers pop, flowers pop, flowers pop.

This is the way the flowers pop, so early in the springtime.

Of course, flowers bloom is more accurate, but for many of our clients that are working on expressive speech, it’s great to included consonant-vowel-consonant words like pop in songs when we can. You can extend this song by talking about colors, matching colors, the possibilities are endless. We hope you have fun using this simple springtime song!
