I’m always on the lookout for songs that work well for both a group of clients and a soloist within the music therapy group. We’ve shared one of our favorite instrument solo songs in the past (find It’s a Beautiful Day here). Today I have another song, Friends are Fine Musicians, that has been a wonderful addition to my repertoire for clients of all ages!

Here is a link to a version on the Dick Van Dyke show. I don’t usually use the “ta da da” part, but you certainly could sing those lines for an excellent way to work on consonant vowel production or leave space for the soloist to play during those lines. You will hear that the song is usually sung as “I’m a Fine Musician” but we like to personalize it by having all peers say or sign the friends name (pointing to a visual is wonderful as well) or singing “Friends are Fine Musicians” for the whole group.

Your children, students, or clients will have the opportunity to work on turn taking, joint attention, and building some self-confidence by playing solo within a group. We hope you have a blast using this versatile song!

Be creative in the instruments you use! We’ve used drums, handbells, quack sticks, frog rasps, chimes, and even an accordion.
